031: always wanting more

While scouring my little mac for photos for an assignment, I realized I had quite a few food pics I hadn't shared with any blog. Some are pretty brutal, from when I was flash-crazy but I think some of these would please you guys. Welcome to Retro Blogs and Ham!

Melina's mom Lisi is kinda my second mom and we try to find fun things to do. Sometimes we bike or knit together. On Passover, we decided to make a big nice meal, even though neither of us are practicing Jews (she's Austrian). Still, we rounded up a few dishes that sounded delish and cooked them up. It was pretty hectic trying to get them all done at the same time. I don't know how those crazy chefs do it.

One of the dishes was tagine-cooked lamb. Apparently you have to cook it in a pan on the stove for a little bit to get rid of some water. Then you pour it into the tagine, which goes in the oven. Melina's sister Tanya started a tagine trend with our families who are now pretty obsessed with them.
Later, we'd dump in some prunes and blanched almonds.

In another skillet, we cooked dried apricots, cranberries and carrot which developed a really lovely sirup. The fruits were then layered over rice and steamed for a while. Mmm.

Whipping up a batter, FTW.

Lisi is kinda amazing at making these big jugs of infused water. Don't believe me? See our summer bruncheon.

The rice got a sprinkling of slivered almonds and pistachios. This was my fave dish.

Nice.

This was a tart-like thing made of matzo with a spinach and feta mixture inside and glazed with egg. So good and the pan was finished that night!

Here is what the tagine'd lamb looked like. Really moist and the almonds were awesome.

Oh. If you were wondering what happened to that batter, it became this marble cake.

030: small fry in a baked potato world

Every weekend, I'm spoiled. Or maybe I just gorge on comfort foods not found in my heat lamp week.

Went to King's Cafe with Steph.

Fried green beans!

Seaweed and tofu or something.

nomnomnom

Enoki mushrooms and spinach. fuck ya.

After midterms, I've gotta some crazy posts lined up.

Oh, and if you're wondering why I didn't post any Thanksgiving turkey, there wasn't one. My fam celebrates the assassination of the American Indians at the same time as the yanks.

029: to leave the water but drink the milk

I'm not sure how long it has been since I posted a full meal. Or wanted to.
One of my oldest friends came home for Thanksgiving and we had to do lunch. A lot of places appeared to be closed this weekend but we went to Terroni and got a divine meal.

Waiting patiently

Fresh bread with oil is so nice.

Baked oyster mushrooms on arugula. A good coating of parmesan too.

Pizza with smoked salmon, cream, capers and fresh tomatoes.

And this made the pizza even better.

Afterwards, feeling super content and stoked on life, we went to Kensington Market Ice Cream.
Noming some Chili Chocolate Fig in a sugar cone.

I got vegan pumkin-pecan. It was insanely pumpkiny (a good thing) and the guys working there were talking about how they should serve it in pie shells. I fully agree!

Tomorrow is the Canadian election. Does anyone care?

028: macaroni will absolve me

I have a deal with a big group of bilingual mobsters.
It's quite funny actually.
Usually they'll ignore me completely.
Then, suddenly out of the blue they'll contact me and demand I tell them everything about my life.
I do this, out of fear.
Sometimes, in great detail.
Then, periodically, they send me a small sum of money.
It's not much.
And it's gone within a couple days.

Thnx Canadian Government for the GST rebate. Now I can buy sushi and PBR tonight!

Earlier, I hermitted out with my mother. I hadn't been in contact with a stove in weeks (grilled cheese at D's doesn't count) and gladly cooked up some shit. Actually, it looks a lot like the only other food I've cooked and posted here. Tada!

Thankfully, if shrimp is the only trick my pony can do, I can live with that. I cook shrimp better than all of y'all.

I visited my darling Muriel at Chippy's and she made me some fish cakes. They were tasty. Also, so hot they fogged up the camera. It's kinda dreamlike, like those fries underneath.

The other night, instead of studying, Jenn and I made root beer floats. I love the milky fizz at the top. One of the wonders of this world.

Go Napoleon ice cream!

Q: What is everyone eating for Thanksgiving? Turkey? Tofurkey? Chinese? SHARE!

027: apple juice won't stain

Went to see Spamalot with my parents. I'd been pulling mad amounts of all-nighters for school and fell asleep during the first act. I managed to wake up for the second act. It was whatever. I'm just grumpy.

Before the show, I achieved pure bliss from Thai food. Imagine how happy I was to see a napkin like this.

spring rolls

Chicken skewer things

The same person that always gets lamb got lamb

Pakistani-Thai noodles? I didn't know they were such good friends.

Coconut milk curried seafood and linguine

And that was a nice change. I can stop bitching for a while.

NUIT BLANCHE TONIGHT!

026: a few cats is lookin' for a rat with cheese

Fine Dining with Mike H.

Once in awhile, I've posted food so vile and trashy that friends have personally messaged me to call me out on it. I'm afraid this one can be added to the shame list.
Recently, my amigo Mike invited me over to see his new crib. I was pretty impressed. Not only was it tidy for a male, it was perched right over the lake. We could hear crashing waves!

Went down the street to pick up some classy dinners from KFC. Trivial Pursuit ketchup packs and all!

We had both been dying to try the chicken bowls, so we split one.
I shouldn't have checked the nutritional calculator when fetching the link but curiosity got the best of me. 740 calories, 34 grams of fat, 2350 milligrams of sodium. Amazing!

It looked nothing like the picture. Fully obliterated by gravvvz, the chicken turned soggy. Mike said "I'd get it again but ask for gravy on the side!"

Dipping fried potato in mashed potato.

Yea, I felt so sick after eating this shit. NEVER AGAIN!

One of his prized possessions.

Hung out for a bit but eventually Mike got hungry again.
This is where the fine china is kept.

Buddy has a MAC STOVE!

Later, I decided to nom a little bit of caf breakfast. It was really grimy.

***

I'm thinking of auctioning off a date with myself to anyone who will take me for fancy dinners or even just eat something mildly healthy in unison. The catch is that I will fully alienate you by taking pictures of the food and making really vulgar jokes for everyone to hear.
Anyone down?
